Sihl presents a solution for print-on-demand printing on PE labels with the introduction of the new PE film portfolio.
According to the company, by expanding the facestock portfolio to include PE base films with an aqueous (AQ) inkjet coating, the company offers maximum flexibility and opens up new, future-proof possibilities for the label industry.
Adaptability for demanding shapes
Described by Sihl as conformable, the new PE films are characterized by exceptional adaptability: according to the company they mold perfectly to curved surfaces and guarantee a crease-free result, so the label adapts to any contour. On containers that are deformed in use, which Sihl describes as squeezable, the label follows every movement without creasing when the container is squeezed.
Low rigidity is the property behind both effects. It also makes these films suitable for small labels on containers with a small diameter, an area where Sihl reports they clearly outperform the properties of conventional BOPP or PET.
Four new AQ inkjet coatings
The portfolio brings aqueous inkjet printing to PE films for the first time, according to Sihl, and covers four specialized coatings. The supplier positions the range as offering the right solution for every application:
- IHG1 Gloss Coating: Offers excellent print quality, presented by Sihl as delivering maximum product appeal.
- IG1 Satin Coating: Ensures excellent print quality in an elegant satin finish.
- ZM1 Matt BS5609: Is water- and chemical-resistant, which the supplier reports makes it suitable for demanding outdoor applications.
- IM1 Matt Universal: Described by Sihl as the all-rounder for a wide variety of indoor applications.
Sustainable and PPWR-friendly
Sihl states that the new product line supports the label industry in complying with the strict EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in the field of mono-materials. The company describes the combination of a PE label on a PE container with print-on-demand (P.O.D.) inkjet technology as a particularly sustainable and future-proof solution for manufacturers and brands.
