    A new Nylon 6,6 grade, designed for filled applications, is being developed that combines a stable high flow with virtually unchanged mechanical properties, enabling filler loadings of greater than 50%.

    It has a strong potential for both converters (increased productivity) and OEMs (new levels of performance) by:

    Enabling filler (and additive) loadings in excess of 50%
    Increasing throughput at compounders and molders
    Reducing molding time, thanks to lower melt processing temperatures and increased flow
    Offering the possibility to work with lower tonnage injection molding machines
    Improving fill performance of thin walled parts

    Addivant Expands Antioxidant Production Capacity at Morgantown Site

    Addivant has announced that it has expanded production capacity by over 40% for its high-performance antioxidant ULTRANOX® 626 at the company’s Morgantown, W. Va. plant.

    ULTRANOX® 626

    • ULTRANOX® 626 is a high-performance, organophosphite antioxidant used in a wide variety of polymers including polyolefins, elastomers, and engineering plastics.
    • ULTRANOX®626 has a higher phosphorus concentration than traditional phosphite antioxidants.
    • It can therefore be used at a lower concentration, resulting in low migration and low volatile-content plastics, which are major requirements of the packaged food and automotive markets.
    • Additionally, Addivant is pursuing the extension of global food-contact approvals for ULTRANOX® 626, allowing for broader use in food packaging.

    In this same context, Addivant announced earlier this year the completion of a three-fold expansion of its polyethylene and elastomer food-contact antioxidant WESTON® 705, reinforcing its commitment to the polymer industry.

    Project Partners Develop FR-incorporated Natural Fiber-reinforced Plastics

    In the construction sector, in the automotive sector and in the electrical industry, biogenic composites have hitherto been closed to many possible uses because they do not meet the statutory requirements for fire protection. This is partly due to the fact that a suitable flame retardancy of biogenic composite materials is difficult and that there are hardly any biogenic flame retardants.

    Biogenic Flame Retardants

    Against this background, the Institute for Innovation, Transfer and Consulting gGmbH (ITB) and the Bio-Composites And More GmbH (BAM) in cooperation with other companies have set themselves the task of finding biogenic flame retardants and incorporating them into natural fiber-reinforced plastics the highest fire classification for plastics (UL 94 V-0) is met.

    As a biogenic flame retardant, the project partners have used a product that is already available on the market, both in powder and in liquid form. Hemp fibers, rye straw and wood flour were used as natural fibers. The thermosetting matrix is based on a linseed oil-based epoxy resin.

    Good flame retardancy was achieved after successful encapsulation of the solid flame retardant, but at the same time there was damage to the fibers. The changes in the flame retardant formulation have reduced this damage. Ultimately, the project partners were able to equip a composite of natural fibers and a predominantly biogenic, thermosetting resin system with a biogenic flame retardant. From this semi-finished product, they were able to produce molded parts for fluorescent tubes that meet the legal fire protection requirements.
